Kurnell Whale Watch Walk

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version
The northerly Whale migration generally peaks during the last two or three weeks of June and early July. However, sightings cannot be guaranteed.

N.B. Toilet facilities are not available at the Headlands. However, the Whale watch platform upgrade has been completed and the road out to there is now open.

MEETING PLACE - Park in Polo St, Kurnell, or local surrounds (no NP entry fee required) and meet Jim near the beginning of Polo St. – at 9am.
PLAN FOR THE DAY - Our route out to the Whale watch area will include a location where toilet facilities are available, at approx. 10am.
The trek on the day will be varied and include untracked, tracked, service roads, board walks and along the rock platforms at the headlands, maintaining a safe distance.
We will spend about 1.5 to 2 hours making our way out to the headlands where we will remain for some 4 to 5 hours. Once there our movements will be dictated by any passing Whale activities (unfortunately they do not provide us with their schedules).
During the day we will make our way to the south before returning. There are numerous suitable locations for lunch and snacks etc.
If we are all experienced in the outdoors, following discussions, it may be possible for some to leave earlier; the route back to the vehicles is straight forward.
WEAR - suitable clothes for the day, including enclosed footwear, long pants, jumpers, perhaps a beanie and wind jacket - even if the weather looks good on the day.
BRING - water, snacks, lunch (perhaps a flask with warm drink), sun protection and sunscreen, 1st Aid kit etc. A camera - if it has “good” lenses, and binoculars if you have them.
ADDITIONAL OPTION - If some do not wish to do the walk, they could join us on the headlands; driving out there to meet us (NP fees applicable). But, be aware that traffic into the park and parking spaces become challenging as the morning progresses. Our estimated arrival there is approx. 10.45am.

IT IS ESSENTIAL that you inform Jim if you are coming on the walk, otherwise you will not be informed of any last minute changes to the plan.
